He lost his mother and younger brother on the way. He eventually arrived at Nyarugusu refugee camp in Tanzania, where he lived most of his life.<\/p>\n<p><b>Adults must listen to children<\/b><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;The life of a child in a refugee camp is hard and difficult,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>explains Baruani. &#8220;<em>There are shortages everywhere. But the worst thing is growing up without a future.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>At the age of nine, Baruani was amazed to learn about the existence of children&#8217;s rights.\u00a0<em>&#8220;I w<\/em><em>as really surprised. The fact that children have rights and that\u00a0<strong>adults have to listen\u00a0<\/strong>to them. For the first time ever, I dared to speak out about my bad situation. That changed my life.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lifestory Baruani Ndume, Winner of the International Children&#039;s Peace Prize 2009\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/O_w2NXoiAWw?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Baruani&#8217;s Action<\/h2>\n<p>Inspired by what he had learned, Baruani became an active member of the camp&#8217;s children&#8217;s parliament:\u00a0<em>&#8220;By defending my rights I\u2019m working on my future. And I tell all the children here that they must do the same. It\u2019s the only way to get away from here.\u00a0<strong>Empowerment<\/strong><strong>is more important than food<\/strong>. Making your voice heard is a true necessity.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Sisi Kwa Sisi<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/baruani-560x819.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Baruani literally makes his voice heard, and those of other children too. He started a radio show,\u00a0&#8216;Sisi Kwa Sisi&#8217;\u00a0(Children for Children), in which he and 20 child reporters address the problems, challenges and frustrations faced by\u00a0<strong>children in refugee camps<\/strong>. Baruani listens to the children&#8217;s stories, and tells them about their rights. He teaches them to speak from their hearts and not to be afraid. It is been a huge success.<\/p>\n<h2>Children reunited with their families<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Radio-560x438.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Every Sunday,\u00a0<strong>thousands of children<\/strong>\u00a0and adults tune in, not just the camp, but far beyond. Thanks to appeals broadcast in the program, many children have been reunited with the families they had lost.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If you don\u2019t risk anything, you risk even more!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;You have to learn that. That\u2019s why I participate in programs like the Child Voice Out Program. We help children practice so that they feel able to speak in public. That\u2019s good for their self-confidence and gives them hope. What\u2019s more, education is the\u00a0<strong>key to the future<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize 2009<\/h3>\n<h2>KidsRights and Baruani<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Baruani-3.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Supported by the KidsRights\u00a0<strong>Care and Study fund<\/strong>, Baruani recently received his high\u00a0school diploma. He is now in registered\u00a0for\u00a0university, where he\u00a0wants to study journalism or social work.<\/p>\n<p>KidsRights empowers Baruani to be a\u00a0<strong>strong\u00a0<em>changemaker<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for displaced children. Every year, Baruani gives nearly 800 child refugees the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stand up for themselves. They learn about their rights and about the importance of education and tolerance, they play sports, and discover their talents. But most of all, they learn that they matter; that they can change the world<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/childrens-rights\/child-participation\/\">Read more about Child Participation<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Our projects<\/h3>\n<h2>Acting for child refugees<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Baruani-21-560x420.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>KidsRights has given Baruani what he needs to make a difference through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/Prize\/Study-Care-Fund\">International Children\u2019s Peace Prize Project Fund<\/a>, financing initiatives to improve the lives of children at Nyarugusu camp. A\u00a0<strong>library<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong>computer center<\/strong>\u00a0have been built, giving\u00a0children the chance to study, read and find information online. Teachers and community members have been trained in areas such as counseling and HIV, to help children process horrific range of traumas they have faced, and still face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sports competitions<\/strong>\u00a0are organized, under Baruani&#8217;s guidance, for children inside and outside the camp, bringing the communities closer together and reducing stigma. Young refugees learn about their rights on Baruani&#8217;s radio show and in the children&#8217;s parliament, giving them the confidence to speak out. And through our funding for educational initiatives, school enrolment has gone up.<\/p>\n<p>None of this would have happend without Baruani, a brave young boy who lost everything, and still devoted himself to helping others. We are proud to be a\u00a0part of his story, and look forward to achieving even more with him in the years to come.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Divided we will fail, united we can build. I believe in you.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Speaking out<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Baruani-Weday-560x372.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Baruani is a founding member\u00a0of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsrightsyoungsters.org\/\">The KidsRights Youngsters<\/a>;\u00a0<\/em>a unique youth-led advocacy and awareness-raising platform for<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/\">\u00a0International Children\u2019s Peace Prize<\/a>\u00a0winners, that aims to realize children\u2019s rights\u00a0as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As\u00a0<strong>leading young\u00a0<em>changemakers<\/em><\/strong>, they act locally, speak out to world leaders, influence policy, and engage children and young people\u00a0worldwide. What these inspiring\u00a0<em>youngsters<\/em>\u00a0have achieved\u00a0on their own is amazing. But that is just the beginning. With our support, their ambition to change the world can be limitless.<\/p>\n<h2> Global Forum on Youth, Peace and Security<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Baruani_peacesummit-560x438.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>In 2015, Baruani was invited from over\u00a011.000 applicants\u00a0to\u00a0speak about the challenges faced by\u00a0refugee children at the Global Forum on\u00a0Youth, Peace and Security in Amman, Jordan.\u00a0The resulting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=AeDeIml1I-Q%3d&amp;portalid=1\">Amman Youth Declaration<\/a>\u00a0called on high-level desicion-makers to\u00a0adopt\u00a0a new\u00a0<strong>international framework<\/strong>\u00a0on Youth Peace and Security.\u00a0And it worked: in the same year,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unoy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2250-annotated-and-explained.pdf\">Resolution 2250<\/a>\u00a0was adopted &#8211;\u00a0the first resolution ever to focus entirely on youth in the\u00a0context of armed conflict.<\/p>\n<h2>Advising the International Criminal Court<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/keita-criminal-court_1-560x324.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>KidsRights believes that children and young people should be meaningfully involved in international\u00a0decision-making\u00a0processes which affect them. As a member of\u00a0<em>The KidsRights Youngsters<\/em>, Baruani was asked to contribute to the development of the Interntional Criminal Court&#8217;s Policy on Children.
