It is part of my life and an opportunity to do things differently.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The impact of Chaeli &amp; KidsRights<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Supported and mobilized 1.000 children with a disability<\/li>\n<li>More than 500 children and young people are empowered as ambassadors for inclusion and diversity<\/li>\n<li>Sports and dance promoted among young people with a disability: 20 young people get (wheelchair) dance training from Chaeli and are coached to gain confidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Chaeli\u2019s story <\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Chaeli-2-560x496.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Michaela &#8216;Chaeli&#8217; Mycroft was born in 1994 in Cape Town, South Africa, with\u00a0<strong>cerebral palsy<\/strong>. As a consequence of this, Chaeli can only use her arms and legs to a limited extent. Nevertheless, she keeps looking at all the things she\u00a0<strong>can do<\/strong>and continues to\u00a0<strong>push<\/strong>\u00a0her<strong>\u00a0boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chaeli finds it very important that children with disabilities are\u00a0<strong>not excluded<\/strong>\u00a0or have fewer opportunities than children without disabilities. She prefers to focus on the\u00a0<strong>possibilities<\/strong>rather than the limitations. All children have the right to a full life, a life in which they get the opportunity to maximize their chances and take a suitable place in society.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe need to remember that every child has light inside them, we need to remember it, especially with children with disabilities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lifestory Chaeli Mycroft, The International Children&#039;s Peace Prize winner 2011\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/24zQ13hQfKI?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Chaeli&#8217;s Action<\/h2>\n<p>At the age of nine, Chaeli, her sister and three friends started a collection campaign with the aim of purchasing a motorized wheelchair. This wheelchair would provide Chaeli with much more freedom and independence. The goal is already achieved within seven weeks, which motivates the girls to continue their actions and provide more children with disabilities with the necessary tools.<\/p>\n<h2>The Chaeli Campaign<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-13-560x366.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>This fundraiser will be the start of The Chaeli Campaign, with the motto: \u2018Hope in Motion\u2019. The Chaeli Campaign has grown into a professional organization with multiple programs to\u00a0<strong>support<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>empower<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>mobilize\u00a0<\/strong>disabled children and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Chaeli&#8217;s organization tries to prevent children with disabilities from being stuck at home. \u2018Inclusion changes everything\u2019. Chaeli believes it&#8217;s important that everyone sees that children with disabilities are also normal children and that people look at what these children can do, instead of what they cannot do.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI can\u2019t change society\u2019s understanding of disability on my own. We need everybody to get involved in creating an inclusive society.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize 2011<\/h3>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The International Children&#039;s Peace Prize 2011\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/IfeKAHK6lGQ?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>KidsRights &amp; Chaeli<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-14-560x371.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Supported by theKidsRights\u00a0<strong>Care and Study Fund<\/strong>, Chaeli obtained her Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Social Science. She is now in the final phase of her Master\u2019s degree in Human Rights Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She is planning on continuing her studies to get a PhD. She wants to specialize in the field of child participation, which is her passion.<\/p>\n<p>KidsRights supports Chaeli as a changemaker in her struggle for\u00a0<strong>equal rights for children with disabilities<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>child participation<\/strong>. The Chaeli Campaign has grown into an<strong>\u00a0international organization<\/strong>\u00a0with dozens of employees who ensure that children with physical disabilities have the necessary tools. In addition, the organization is committed to the rights of children with disabilities in general, so that inclusion can be prevented.<\/p>\n<h3>Our projects<\/h3>\n<h2>Acting for disabled children<\/h2>\n<p>KidsRights has supported Chaeli in her fight for the\u00a0<strong>rights\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0<strong>disabled children\u00a0<\/strong>with the Children\u2019s Peace Prize Fund 2011. The lives of many children with disabilities in South Africa have improved. For example, children are supported with regard to education, training and therapies. Besides Chaeli&#8217;s own initiative, The Chaeli Campaign, KidsRights also financially supported FW de Klerk Foundation.<\/p>\n<h2> FW de Klerk Foundation<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-15-560x428.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>This foundation also operates in South Africa and focuses on improving the lives of children with disabilities. The FW de Klerk Foundation was founded by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate F.W. de Klerk. Special care centers have been established where mentally disabled children receive the appropriate care and education. In addition, this organization is committed to increase school-related successes for children in disadvantaged neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<h2>Pay-It-Forward<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The ambassador program<\/strong>\u00a0of The Chaeli Campaign that KidsRights already supports is Pay-It-Forward. This program trains children between the ages of 9 and 14, with and without physical disabilities, on their\u00a0<strong>communication skills, leadership skills\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>network capacities.<\/strong>\u00a0In this way they want to contribute to the development of skills of children that help to make positive changes in their own community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you want change, you should work on it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Speaking out <\/h2>\n<p>Chaeli is a founding member of\u00a0The KidsRights Youngsters; a unique youth-led advocacy and awareness-raising platform for\u00a0International Children\u2019s Peace Prize winners, that aims to realize children\u2019s rights\u00a0as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As\u00a0leading young\u00a0changemakers, they act locally, speak out to world leaders, influence policy, and engage children and young people\u00a0worldwide. What these inspiring youngsters have achieved on their own is amazing. But that is just the beginning. With our support, their ambition to change the world can be limitless.<\/p>\n<h2> World Summit for Nobel Peace Prize Winners<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-16-560x425.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>In February 2017, KidsRights, Nobel Peace Prize winners, leaders and young people from all over the world gathered in Bogota, Colombia, to create inspiring and practical solutions for the current international challenges. During this unique gathering, the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize winners discussed everything that should be done to achieve\u00a0<strong>sustainable peace.<\/strong>\u00a0Chaeli attended this day together with co-KidsRights Youngster Kehkashan Basu. Together with two other Colombian young changemakers, they received the Turner Social Change Prize. This prize serves to support their activism; a well-deserved worldwide recognition for their constant efforts to change the world!<\/p>\n<h2> Comrades Marathon<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"747\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/chaelz_tom_worldrace_03052015-560x747.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>In 2016, Chaeli and her friend Anita were the first wheelchair athletes, in the nearly 100-year history of the Comrades Marathon, that reached the finish. The Comrades Marathon is a race of 89 kilometers from the South African Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Initially, Chaeli and Anita could not participate in the marathon because of their wheelchairs. They started a petition to stand up for their right to participate. This petition was successful and Chaeli has participated in this marathon three times already.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I felt a lot of pressure to perform well because we were the first participants in a wheelchair ever. Winning a bronze medal proves that we indeed have the right to be part of this race.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2> Climbing the Kilimanjaro and Lion&#8217;s Head<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"547\" height=\"820\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Chaeli-11.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<p>Chaeli continues to prove to the world that nothing stands in your way if you work for it. In August 2015, Chaeli became the first woman with tetraplegia (paralysis of four limbs and torso) to climb\u00a0<strong>the Kilimanjaro.<\/strong>\u00a0Then she became one of the first two quadriplegics to complete the Comerades marathon in South Africa. This shows once again that you should never look at what people cannot do, but at what they can do. Also, Chaeli and a team have climbed the Lion&#8217;s Head in Cape Town. Here too she set a record, as the first person with tetraplegia to reach the top. Undoubtedly, even more\u00a0<strong>admirable performances<\/strong>\u00a0will follow, as Chaeli is not ready yet and will do anything to keep surprising us.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople with disabilities have endless potential.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;In my life, disability has never been seen as a problem or a burden.
