But Malala loves learning. Encouraged by her father, who ran the local school, Malala broke with tradition and went to high school to continue her education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Girls are banned from school<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen the\u00a0Taliban took over parts of Pakistan\u00a0in 2007, everything changed. Television, music and cinema were banned, women could\u00a0not go to the market and girls were stopped from going\u00a0to school.\u00a0150 schools were blown up by the Taliban in 2008.\u00a0<em>&#8220;My friends and I don\u2019t understand what\u00a0is so wrong about going to school. My father says that the Taliban are\u00a0<strong>afraid of pens<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Malala\u2019s Action <\/h3>\n<p>Malala took part in a peace march organised by her school, and appeared on a BBC Urdu chat show. <em>&#8220;I w<\/em><em>as really excited,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>she said,<em>\u00a0&#8216;&#8221;because I knew that everyone in Pakistan could hear me, but that\u2019s why I said: How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education?&#8221; T<\/em>hat is when she\u00a0started\u00a0writing\u00a0<strong>a blog<\/strong>\u00a0for the BBC. Writing\u00a0under a pseudonym, she described her passion for learning and the oppression of the Taliban. Her blog was an inspiration to many.<\/p>\n<h2>Attacked for going to school<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Malala-injured-560x315.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>Malala was\u00a0<strong>nominated<\/strong>\u00a0in 2011 for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/\">International Children\u2019s Peace Prize<\/a>, in recognition of her bravery in speaking out for every girl&#8217;s right to\u00a0an education. She did not win, but by now she was a global figure, invited to speak around the world. In October 2012, Taliban gunmen boarded her school bus, identified Malala, and shot her in the head.<\/p>\n<h2>To stop or continue<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/03447_Malala-Kenya_\u00a9TanyaMalott-2014A-1-560x373.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>Malala was brought to the United Kingdom, where she recovered\u00a0from the attack and stayed with her family.\u00a0In\u00a0<strong>2013<\/strong>, she was awarded\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/\">International Children\u2019s Peace Prize<\/a>\u00a0and given a standing ovation in The Hague. Her resolve strengthened. &#8220;After the attack,&#8221; she said,\u00a0<em>&#8220;I\u00a0only had two\u00a0options: stop or continue my mission. And I decided to continue. On her 16th birthday, she gave a passionate speech to the United Nations. She was inundated with awards, culminating in the ultimate honour in 2014, the\u00a0<strong>Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>KidsRights &amp; Malala<\/h2>\n<p>Supported by the KidsRights\u00a0<strong>Care and Study fund<\/strong>, Malala has finished high school and is looking forward to attending university.<\/p>\n<p>Malala is now a household name, giving her a platform to champion the rights of children, and particularly the right of girls to go to school.\u00a0In 2013, she and her father set up the\u00a0<strong>Malala Fund\u00a0<\/strong>to bring education to children around the world. Your generous support allows us to do that,\u00a0enabling courageous young people like Malala to lead the way.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Achtergrondfoto-Malala-560x373.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<h3>Our Projects<\/h3>\n<h2>Acting for girls education<\/h2>\n<p>Our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/Prize\/Project-Fund\">International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize Project Fund<\/a>\u00a0supports\u00a0five new education projects\u00a0in Pakistan, involving\u00a0nearly\u00a0<strong>7,500<\/strong>\u00a0children, with an emphasis on girls.\u00a0Malala was personally involved in the development of two of these projects, one providing schooling and shelter to orphans in her own home town. Many girls helped by these projects want to become teachers themselves in the future, and with more female teachers, more girls will be able to go to school.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/malala_speech-560x355.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I want to live in a world where education is valued in every corner of the globe because no one is excluded from it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Speaking out <\/h2>\n<p>Malala is a founding member of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsrightsyoungsters.org\/\">The KidsRights Youngsters<\/a>;\u00a0<\/em>a unique youth-led advocacy and awareness-raising platform for\u00a0International Children\u2019s Peace Prize winners, that aims to realize children\u2019s rights\u00a0as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As\u00a0<strong>leading young\u00a0<em>changemakers<\/em><\/strong>, they act locally, speak out to world leaders, influence policy, and engage children and young people\u00a0worldwide. What these inspiring youngsters have achieved on their own is amazing. But that is just the beginning. At just 17 years old, she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in<strong>\u00a0December\u00a02014<\/strong>, along KidsRights\u2019 long-standing partner, children&#8217;s rights and education advocate Kailash Satyarthi.<\/p>\n<h2>Malala&#8217;s celebration of International Children\u2019s Peace Prize nominees <\/h2>\n<p>In 2016, a record number of 120\u00a0children were nominated\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/childrenspeaceprize.org\/\">International Children\u2019s Peace Prize<\/a>; their stories were boosted by KidsRights through social media, celebrating the power of children in every corner of the world. Malala was inspired by their determination:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I strongly encourage everyone to read the stories of the brave children who are nominated for the International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize 2016. They are proof that bravery and courage are not dependent on age. They demonstrate that anyone can act against violations of children\u2019s rights and become a changemaker.
