In 2005 Neha visited\u00a0her grandparents in India<strong>\u00a0to celebrate birthdays with the children<\/strong>\u00a0of the local\u00a0orphanage.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time reality dawned on her. Her young friends in the\u00a0orphanage, who seemed to have\u00a0so much in common with her, had\u00a0<strong>no chance of an\u00a0education<\/strong>. They faced malnutrition and disease; and\u00a0they lacked love and\u00a0support. Neha was shocked. She considered empathy to be insufficient, she\u00a0needed to act.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lifestory Neha Gupta, Winner of the International Children&#039;s Peace Prize 2014\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/5xyuaJhIe1Q?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h3>Neha\u2019s action<\/h3>\n<p>The situation left such an impression on Neha, that she went straight\u00a0home to the suburbs of\u00a0Philadelphia and embarked on her first fundraiser. Going\u00a0door to door, and reaching out to friends, she\u00a0<strong>collected toys and goods for a\u00a0garage sale\u00a0<\/strong>which netted around $800. Inspired by her success, she\u00a0sought\u00a0further donations from friends, family and the general public. A year later,\u00a0she returned to India\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>$5,000<\/strong>\u00a0to fund a library, food, clothes and blankets\u00a0for the children of the orphanage.<\/p>\n<h2> Empower Orphans<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-12-560x367.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>In 2009, when she was 9 years old she\u00a0started her own organization,\u00a0<strong>Empower\u00a0Orphans<\/strong>. Education and health are central in Neha&#8217;s vision. Empower\u00a0Orphans sponsors the education of\u00a0individual children with food, clothing, health care and medical\u00a0supplies. They\u00a0also have established libraries, computer labs, a science center and a sewing center,\u00a0in\u00a0several schools in India.<\/p>\n<p>As time passed, Neha saw that there were\u00a0American children in her region who also desperately needed\u00a0help. So why stop at\u00a0only helping children in India? Neha made sure her organization expanded its\u00a0reach\u00a0to Pennsylvania. At her University in Pennsylvania, she started a\u00a0Penn State Chapter for Empower Orphans op. The aim of the chapter is to encourage her fellow students to take action and to help underprivileged children.<\/p>\n<h2>Inspiration<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Achtergrondfoto-Neha-560x371.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>What is truly remarkable about Neha\u2019s\u00a0achievement is the extent to which everything has been carried\u00a0out by children,\u00a0for children.\u00a0Neha\u00a0has<strong>\u00a0empowered children and youth to\u00a0become social actors<\/strong>, by\u00a0supporting her organization or by starting social\u00a0projects of their own. Children and young people in the\u00a0USA, India, Singapore\u00a0and Australia have all been inspired by her example, supported and guided by\u00a0her\u00a0expertise. She has achieved all this as a schoolgirl. And she won\u2019t stop\u00a0now that she is a student.\u00a0Neha\u00a0is an inspiring young woman who\u00a0demonstrates, like her hero Gandhi, that you can &#8220;be the change you\u00a0wish to see\u00a0in the world&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8221;Winning the International Children\u2019s Peace Prize has truly helped me to feel empowered.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize 2014<\/h2>\n<h2>KidsRights &amp; Neha<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"383\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/screenshot-11.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>Supported\u00a0by the KidsRights\u00a0<strong>Care and Study fund<\/strong>,\u00a0Neha started on a premedical track in college and dreams of becoming a doctor\u00a0in support of the health of children.<\/p>\n<p>KidsRights empowers Neha to be a\u00a0strong\u00a0<strong><em>changemaker<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>for children who\u00a0want to\u00a0participate.\u00a0Neha\u00a0has\u00a0empowered children and youth to\u00a0become\u00a0social actors, by\u00a0supporting her organization or by starting\u00a0social projects of their own.\u00a0Children and young people all over the world have all been inspired by her\u00a0example.<\/p>\n<h3>Our projects<\/h3>\n<h2>Acting for child participation<\/h2>\n<p>Child Participation\u00a0means that children can discuss and co-decide on all matters that affect them,\u00a0like family, school, community\u00a0matters, government policies and legal policies.\u00a0Decisions about children are often made for them but not with them. Child\u00a0participation\u00a0<strong>increases self-esteem and self-believe of the children<\/strong>. It is an\u00a0important step in realizing the rights of children and also\u00a0one of the core\u00a0principals of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children have the\u00a0right to be heard and the right to\u00a0access to information.<\/p>\n<p>Child participation is key in everything KidsRights\u00a0does. KidsRights believes in the power of children and sees children themselves\u00a0as\u00a0changemakers. In support of Neha\u00a0KidsRights sponsors projects\u00a0focused on\u00a0child participation.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Neha-action2-560x371.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<h2>BBA Child Participation research<\/h2>\n<p>Through the project fund on child participation a major research has been done in India on imparting knowledge about the need of children\u2019s participation towards protecting their rights as well as the development of their community. The children are encouraged to raise their voice, to ensure their participation in taking decision on matters affecting their lives and rights. As a result a toolkit to embed child participation in community development is developed which will be used to further spread child participation in community development.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou should not only sympathize with people, you have to empathize, and turn ideas into action.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Speaking out<\/h2>\n<p>Neha\u00a0is a founding member of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsrightsyoungsters.org\/\">The KidsRights\u00a0Youngsters<\/a>; a unique youth-led advocacy and awareness raising platform of the\u00a0International Children\u2019s Peace Prize winners, that aims to realize children\u2019s\u00a0rights, as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of\u00a0the Child.\u00a0<strong>As leading young\u00a0<em>changemakers<\/em><\/strong>, they act locally, speak\u00a0out to world leaders, influence policy, and engage children and\u00a0youth\u00a0worldwide.<\/p>\n<h2>  TEDx Youth<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/neha-TEDx-9-560x840.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>In April 2015 Neha inspired youth at the\u00a0TEDx\u00a0Youth conference\u00a0at The\u00a0Dalton School in New York City.\u00a0The central theme of the Youth conference was:\u00a0What are you doing to\u00a0<strong>influence\u00a0your community<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0the better?<br \/>\nNeha spoke about youth volunteerism in one own\u2019s\u00a0community, her organization\u00a0Empower Orphans and introduced\u00a0<em>The\u00a0KidsRights\u00a0Youngsters<\/em>. Neha shared the message:\u00a0we can ALL move the world!\u00a0Neha\u2019s\u00a0inspiring story is featured in The Collective Project, a\u00a0celebration of college\u00a0students working to improve the world, initiated by Microsoft OneNote.<\/p>\n<h2> ECOSOC<\/h2>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/09\/Thandiwe-and-Neha-during-the-ECOSOC-Youth-Forum-640-560x429.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n<p>Together with\u00a0Co-KidsRights\u00a0<em>Youngster\u00a0<\/em>Thandiwe,\u00a0Neha participated\u00a0in the\u00a0Economic and Social\u00a0Council (ECOSOC) Youth.\u00a0<em>&#8220;This\u00a0is a good opportunity for\u00a0The KidsRights Youngsters\u00a0to let their\u00a0voices be heard,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0she said.<br \/>\nThis ECOSOC Youth Forum is convened\u00a0to discuss the collaboration with children and youth in the\u00a0development,\u00a0implementation and evaluation of the new sustainable goals.
