These children have to work under hazardous circumstances and often become victims of child abuse \u00a0and exploitation.<\/p>\n<h2>What is child labor? <\/h2>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/advocacy\/winners\/om-prakash-gurjar\/\">2006 &#8211; Om Prakash Gurjar (14), India<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The term \u2018child labour\u2019 is defined as work that deprives children, from 0 -15 year, of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, their right to education and\/or that is harmful to physical and mental development. In addition, extreme forms of labor performed by children between 15 and 18 years also fall within the definition of child labor. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibits child labour.<\/p>\n<h2>Did you know&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>that worldwide\u00a0168 million\u00a0children are involved in child labor?<\/li>\n<li>that Asia has the largest number of child labor, especially India, but that in Sub-Saharan Africa also 1 in every 5 children has to work?<\/li>\n<li>that children usually work because their parents do not earn enough money, but that child labor only maintains the\u00a0poverty?<\/li>\n<li>children have the right to be protected from slavery and forced labor, the right to education and the right to play?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What does KidsRights do?<\/h2>\n<h4>projects &amp; KidsRights reports on Child Labor:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/research\/kidsrights-reports\/child-labor-not-so-sweet\/\">Child Labor: Not so sweet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>KidsRights works together with local partners to stand up for the rights of the children through research, action and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archived.kidsrights.webkey8.nl\/uk\/advocacy\/international-childrens-peace-prize\/winners\/om-prakash-gurjar\/\">Om Prakash<\/a>, winner of the International Children\u2019s Peace Prize in 2006, was liberated by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and then was taken care of in a family home. In 2006 BBA nominated Om Prakash for the International Children\u2019s Peace Prize because of his fight against child labor in India.
