Keita, or Keita for short, was born during Liberia\u2019s <strong>brutal civil war<\/strong>. His\u00a0father, a driver for a humanitarian\u00a0organization, was killed in an ambush when Keita was only five years old.<\/p>\n<p>Keita grew up <strong>in extreme\u00a0poverty <\/strong>with his mother and siblings in West Point, the <strong>largest slum<\/strong> of Liberia\u2019s capital, Monrovia. Although\u00a0the civil war ended\u00a0in 2003, it left deep scars in society and its impact continues to be felt today.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lifestory Abraham M. Keita, Winner of the International Children&#039;s Peace Prize 2015\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/0esSU3nWk6w?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Keita\u2019s action <\/h2>\n<p>Keita\u00a0was just 9 years old when he was first moved to speak out. Outraged by the rape and murder of a 13 year old girl in his community, he<strong> took part in a peaceful protest <\/strong>demanding that the perpetrators &#8211; her foster parents &#8211; be brought to trial. Making an impression on his peers, Keita was invited to join the\u00a0Liberian Children\u2019s Parliament, where\u00a0his passion for advocacy was\u00a0nurtured.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I will be able to rest when every child across the globe will be able to smile and say that violence has been eliminated.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Children\u2019s Rights Act<\/h3>\n<p>Keita embraced his membership of the children&#8217;s parliament,<strong> organizing\u00a0peaceful marches<\/strong> and calling on the Liberian government to respect children&#8217;s rights. In 2012 his efforts were rewarded with the\u00a0signing into law of the Children&#8217;s Act. Keita\u00a0<strong>organized a second march <\/strong>to demand that the government take responsibility for the teenager&#8217;s death. The march sparked national debate, and because of Keita, the government was forced to acknowledge its culpability.<\/p>\n<h2>The International Children&#8217;s Peace Prize 2015<\/h2>\n<p><div class=\"embedded-media embedded-media_YouTube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Highlights of the International Children&#039;s Peace Prize ceremony 2015\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Hg2iEkqIsmA?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0&#038;wmode=opaque\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>KidsRights &#038; Keita <\/h2>\n<p>Keita\u00a0received his high school diploma in 2016, supported by the\u00a0KidsRights <strong>Care and Study fund<\/strong>. He now attends university.<\/p>\n<p>KidsRights is proud to empower\u00a0Keita as a\u00a0<strong><em>changemaker <\/em><\/strong>for children who are victims of violence. He is an inspiration to many hundreds of children and young people, through direct action, lobbying an the media, informing and mobilizing them to stand\u00a0up for their right to be safe from violence.<\/p>\n<h3>Our Projects<\/h3>\n<h2>Acting against violence<\/h2>\n<p>Almost half of Liberia&#8217;s children have personally experienced physical violence, and despite the introduction of new laws to protect their rights, the reality on the ground has yet to catch up. Inspired by Keita&#8217;s unwavering commitment to making things better, KidsRights has come together with local partners\u00a0to support a number of projects in this area.<\/p>\n<p>We are working for\u00a0<strong>the\u00a0implementation of the children\u2019s law<\/strong>, by training workers to ensure that children who have suffered violence are given access to\u00a0justice. We are training children themselves to use social media to\u00a0<strong>raise awareness of their rights<\/strong>. We are building help desks to make it possible for children to report violence against them, and we are offering training within communities and institutions to encourage the prevention of sexual violence in particular.<\/p>\n<p>On his popular weekly<strong>\u00a0radio program<\/strong>, #OurFuture, Keita raised\u00a0burning issues affecting Liberian children and young people, encouraging them to open up about difficult topics such as sexual violence.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is high time to protect all of us, the world&#8217;s children, particularly the most vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Speaking out <\/h2>\n<p>Keita is a\u00a0member of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsrightsyoungsters.org\/\">The KidsRights Youngsters<\/a>;\u00a0<\/em>a unique youth-led advocacy and awareness-raising platform of the International Children\u2019s Peace Prize winners, that aims to realize children\u2019s rights\u00a0as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child<em>.<\/em>\u00a0As\u00a0<strong>leading young\u00a0<em>changemakers<\/em><\/strong>, they act locally, speak out to world leaders, influence policy, and engage children and young people\u00a0worldwide. What these inspiring\u00a0<em>youngsters<\/em>\u00a0have achieved on their own is amazing. But that is just the beginning. When the\u00a0<strong>March for our Lives<\/strong>\u00a0was happening on the 24th of March, Keita went to Washington to join the youth of America. The March for our Lives was a demonstration march for a tighter gun control and against gun violence against children. Not only violence against children has a special place in Keita\u2019s campaigning, also the impact of gun violence is something he knows the impact of: \u201c<em>At age 9, a gun ruined my life; a single bullet from a gun changed my story.
